How to prepare for an exposure audit

Simple preparation helps connect external observations to the right assets and makes results easier to act on.

Servers and network cabling

Gather known reference points

Prepare your domains, brands, main addresses and relevant entities. Mention recent acquisitions, migrations, providers or applications. You do not need a perfect inventory already; you need useful starting points and someone able to confirm asset ownership and relationships.

Define the boundaries

Specify included entities and third-party services. An external observation alone may not establish ownership. Validation methods and any active checks must be agreed with appropriate authorisation before work starts. Make the distinction between confirmed assets and suspected relationships visible.

Prepare the follow-up

Identify who receives results and who can decide on action. Ask for a distinction between observed facts, points to confirm and proposed priorities. Plan a discussion with technical owners to correct asset attribution errors and turn findings into actions with clear responsibility.
